Your gateway to
the decentralized web.

MetaMask is a self-custody wallet that helps you connect to Ethereum and other compatible blockchain networks from your browser. Its Chrome extension puts a wallet in your toolbar, so you can review transactions, manage digital assets, and connect to decentralized applications (dApps) without handing control of your keys to a centralized platform.

That browser connection is the useful part: rather than creating a separate account for every onchain service, you can approve a connection with your wallet. The wallet is a tool, not an investment recommendation, and using it does not guarantee that a token, protocol, or transaction is safe or profitable.

More than a place
to hold tokens.

Manage a wallet

View supported assets, check your activity, and send or receive tokens. A wallet address is public; your Secret Recovery Phrase is not.

Choose networks

Use Ethereum and add supported networks when needed. Network choice matters: assets and fees differ, and transfers to an incompatible address can be irreversible.

Learn about networks ↗

Start with the
right first steps.

Take a few minutes to set things up carefully. The small decisions you make at installation and backup time can protect you later.

01

Find the official source

Type metamask.io into your browser and use its download page to reach the Chrome Web Store listing. Check the publisher and listing details. Avoid sponsored search results, unsolicited messages, and download links shared in comments or direct messages. Fake wallet extensions can imitate familiar names and graphics.

02

Install and create or import

Follow the prompts in the official extension. You can create a new wallet or import an existing one using its recovery phrase. Treat that phrase like the master key to your wallet: anyone who gets it may be able to control your funds. Never enter it into a website claiming to validate, sync, or upgrade your wallet.

↗
03

Back up offline

Write your Secret Recovery Phrase down and store it somewhere private and physically secure. Do not photograph it, save it in cloud notes, email it, or share it with support. MetaMask support will never need your phrase. If you lose it and lose access to your device, there may be no central service able to restore your wallet.

04

Make a small, deliberate test

Before sending a meaningful amount, learn how addresses, networks, and fees work. Confirm the recipient address and selected network character by character, then consider a small test transaction. Transactions confirmed on a blockchain are typically irreversible; a wrong destination cannot usually be recalled by a bank or help desk.

What does DeFi
access actually mean?

Decentralized finance (DeFi) describes blockchain-based services that can offer activities such as token swaps, lending, borrowing, and liquidity provision through smart contracts. With a wallet, you can connect to these services and sign transactions yourself. The extension is the interface for reviewing requests; it does not make a protocol trustworthy or remove financial risk.

A connection is not the same as a transaction. A dApp may ask to view your public address, while an action such as swapping tokens requires a separate signature. Read the wallet prompt, understand what is being authorized, and reject requests you did not initiate or cannot explain. Be especially careful with token approvals that grant a contract ongoing access to an asset.

Prices can move sharply, liquidity can disappear, code can contain vulnerabilities, and malicious sites can present convincing imitations. Smart-contract interactions may be complex or impossible to reverse. Begin by learning with small amounts you can afford to lose, and never borrow or risk essential funds to participate.

Networks have
their own rules.

Ethereum is a blockchain network; ETH is its native asset, used for transaction fees (often called gas) and other functions. MetaMask can also work with additional compatible networks. Each network has its own ecosystem, fee market, and assets. A token that appears on one network is not automatically available on another, even if it has the same name or logo.

Before transferring funds or interacting with a dApp, compare the network shown in the wallet with the network expected by the recipient or service. Fees vary with network activity and transaction complexity; the amount presented may change before confirmation. Never assume a low fee means a transaction is safe, or that an unsupported transfer can be recovered.

↗Pause before you sign. Check the site, network, destination, amount, and permission in every wallet prompt.

Your best security feature
is a healthy pause.

Self-custody gives you control, and that means your habits matter. Keep these essentials close.

01

Guard your phrase

Never share your Secret Recovery Phrase or private key. No legitimate support agent, giveaway, or dApp needs it.

02

Verify every link

Bookmark services you trust. Check domains carefully, especially when a message creates urgency or promises a reward.

03

Read before approving

Review the network, transaction details, and permissions. Reject unexpected prompts and disconnect sites you no longer use.

04

Keep your device safe

Update Chrome and your extension through official channels. Use a screen lock and avoid wallet activity on shared computers.

!

Remember: MetaMask is software, not a bank. Anyone with your recovery phrase may control your wallet, and lost or stolen assets may not be recoverable.
